Five Holidays That Break the Mould

An increasing number of people are ditching the usual package holiday in favour of more unusual destinations. Many are willing to travel further afield to avoid the crowds and experience a different culture or stunning scenery. I am a huge fan of this approach and it has led to some of my most exciting and memorable trips. If you are considering going somewhere a little more unusual but you’re not sure where to start, here are my top five suggestions. Some of these are quite touristy but they are a far cry from the Spanish Costas and make a great starting point for adventurous travelers. There are so many resorts in the world but so little time to choose from. Squeeze many Canada snow holidays into one by experiencing several resorts in a single trip.

1. Abel Tasman. If you are looking for a beach destination with a difference, there is no better place than the Abel Tasman National Park in South Island, New Zealand. I can only describe this as the most beautiful place in the world. It is an unspoiled area with native flora and fauna, stunning white beaches and secluded coves. The water is calm and clear and the area is full of wildlife from orcas to seals to unusual birds. Even in the height of the tourist season, you could find a deserted beach, swim in the sea and enjoy a picnic. The pace of life is relaxed but there is plenty to do if you want to.

Of course, if you are visiting the Abel Tasman, it should form part of a trip to travel around New Zealand. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, traveling to New Zealand is a big deal. It will take you a minimum of 24 hours to get there from the UK. I would recommend that two weeks is the absolute minimum amount of time you should stay, but to really make the most of the country you will need at least two months. I have spent a total of eight weeks there and there are still areas I haven’t made it to that I want to visit and of course, places like the Abel Tasman that it is my life’s ambition to visit again.

2. Whistler. As a winter holiday destination, Whistler in Canada is widely accepted as one of the best. Its popularity has increased further since hosting the alpine and Nordic events in the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding or would like to give it a go, a trip to Whistler should certainly be on your list of things to do.

However if you are looking for an unusual summer destination, Whistler mustn’t be overlooked. Outdoor activities are available in abundance from summer skiing to bear watching, from mountain biking to relaxing spa days. For keen golfers, there are four championship courses in one resort. I don’t play golf but the idea of a stroll (ruined or otherwise) in the fresh mountain air, taking in the stunning scenery sounds fantastic. Water sports are also available, from white water rafting to relaxing canoeing on the calm lakes. The amazing mountain lakes also boast inland beaches where you can enjoy a picnic in the sunshine and the calm, inviting water is perfect for a dip.

3. Cape Town. In recent years, the popularity of South Africa as a holiday destination has increased. Certain areas are still somewhat unsafe and are best avoided. However, Cape Town, along with nearby Somerset West, Stellenbosch and the Cape Wine Route are all fantastic holiday destinations and as long as you are careful, they are reasonably safe. Cape Town’s most famous landmark is the unique and imposing Table Mountain. There are numerous walking and climbing routes up the mountain, but if that’s not for you, the Cableway will take you up there in just three minutes.

To learn a bit about Cape Town’s history, you could take a to Robben Island where Nelson Mandella spent 18 of his 27 years of incarceration. You will be shown around the Island by a former political prisoner, who will give you an insight into what life was like for those imprisoned here. The whole island is now a World Heritage Site. A trip to Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without paying a visit to the world famous Boulders Beach. Travel around the beautiful False Bay to just outside Simon’s Town and you will find yourself in the unusual situation of sharing a beautiful sandy beach with several hundred penguins.

4. Phuket. The popularity of Thailand as a tourist destination is increasing. Many people looking to escape the normal European holidays are looking further afield to beach destinations such as Phuket. In and around the area, there are plenty of activities on offer. You could take a bamboo rafting and elephant trekking tour in Khao Lak nature reserve, where you will visit a turtle-breeding farm, see water buffalo and tropical birds on the river and then ride through mountain paths on the back of an elephant. If you prefer to be on the coast, you could go island hopping by private speedboat, or try big-game fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling or sea kayaking.

Of course you also have the usual beach or resort holiday options of relaxing by the coast or the pool. If you are looking to experience the Thai culture away from a tourist resort, it is worth factoring in a few days in Bangkok into your holiday. Many airlines will fly you to Bangkok, where you transfer to your flight to Phuket. Bangkok is busy, bustling and exciting. It is also very hot and humid and would be hard work with young children so do take the time to research the city and decide whether a visit is right for you.

5. Venezuela. This is the least touristy and most unusual of the destinations that I would recommend for a holiday. If you are interested in experiencing unspoiled South America, Venezuela is definitely the place to go. Just off the mainland is Margarita Island. This is a typical Caribbean Island with sun, sea, sand and a great party atmosphere. Back on the mainland, the capital, Caracas is worth a visit and is the ideal place to link up with a tour of the country with a local guide. I can’t recommend the local guides highly enough. I traveled with a group of nine people and our guide even took us to his home town where we partied all night with his friends and enjoyed an afternoon barbeque with his family.

You can visit the famous and spectacular Angel Falls by boat or helicopter. Either way, it is a breath-taking sight. It is also worth visiting the more remote areas to the south of Venezuela on the border with Brazil such as Santa Elena de Uairén and the Canaima National Park. For a really authentic experience, take a trip down the Orinoco Delta. You can take a boat along the Delta and, hours from the nearest town, you will start to see the native tribes living at the water’s edge. Certain tribes welcome visitors and will even let you stay with them, sleeping in a hammock in the jungle. There is nothing more magical than waking up at dawn to the sound of howler monkeys calling nearby trees.

Cheap Ski Holidays and Skiing Deals

Canada is a hot destination for skiers this winter. The forecast from environment Canada calls for an average or above average temperature range and lots of precipitation. The last several years, particularly in Eastern Canada, warm temperatures and little snow fall had a disastrous effect on ski businesses. Some were on the brink of bankruptcy and have been saved by the early winter conditions of 2007/2008. Lot of ski Canada deals to choose from, most in my bucket list can be found at Bluepowder.com.au.

Residents of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and in major US cities didn’t see much snow last year so skiing and outdoor winter sports including snowmobiling have not been on people’s minds. The effect on tourism and hotel accommodation has been dramatic. This year, people are being encouraged to get outdoors as a healthy lifestyle choice. If that isn’t convincing enough, Muskoka hotels, Vancouver hotels, Banff hotels, and Whistler Hotels are offering discounted prices for ski vacations. Hotel ski deals are a great way to experience a complete, relaxing getaway while having all the luxury amenities too.

With Banff and Whistler hotel room rates dropping, it is the perfect time to book a ski vacation getaway in the mountains of Western Canada. Here you can enjoy some of the best snow conditions in North American with incredibly long ski runs.

Skiers can book a Vancouver hotel room and ski at Grouse Mountain. You don’t necessarily have to stay in Whistler to enjoy a ski vacation. A room in Vancouver offers lower rates and better access to activities in Vancouver including shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Grouse mountain is only a few miles from downtown Vancouver. It offers 26 runs and skiers can take the Olympic Express high-speed quad chair lift which can transport 2,000 skiers every hour. This is a major ski destination for Vancouverites.

Whistler BC is a spectacular location and the coming Winter Olympic games will make the sea to sky highway very busy. Rooms in Whistler may all be booked now, so if you want to experience Whistler lifestyle and visit the now completed Olympic venues, why not make a vacation getaway in Whistler Blackcomb? Whistler Mountain offers an incredible and even exhausting ski hill with more than 8100 acres of skiable terrain and a 5,000 foot vertical drop. Whistler BC is one of North America’s top ski destinations and there are plenty of Whistler hotels to book your ski getaway. Look for last minute room packages offered to email newsletter subscribers.

For residents of Alberta and the eastern Rocky Mountains, Banff and Kananaskis are the ski destinations of choice. Three major ski areas provide hundreds of ski runs and thousands of skiable terrain, including cross county ski trails. Sunshine Mountain, Ski Lake Louise, Mount Norquay, and Nakiska in Kananaskis provide incredible skiing and plenty of sunshine. Skiers can stay at either Kananaskis village hotel resort or at the major Banff hotels. The ski hills are not far off and shuttle bus services are available. Skiing is big business in Banff and the ski hills here are world class. The experience of taking North America’s longest gondola ride to the Sunshine mountain ski resort is a pleasure in itself. The gondola caresses the mountain side to the base of the ski hill at an elevation of 7200 feet. From there, skiers of every skill level will find some incredible skiing experiences. Highly skilled skiers can ride the lifts to the top of Sunshine Mountain at 8954 feet. Here you’re skiing amidst the clouds for a mystical, otherworldly experience. The 33 feet of annual snow shouldn’t frighten you as the trail grooming is exceptional. 20% of the trails are beginner grade and further. The ski out trail to the parking lot is a lot of fun for those with endurance. It goes all the way to the parking lot near the TransCanada highway.

Nakiska ski hill is the featured ski hill at the former Olympic ski venue for the Calgary Olympics. The drive from Calgary is less than an hour and you’ll find thousands of Calgarians skiing here every weekend. The Kananaskis Resort has several hotels and lodgings, but the centerpiece of the village is the Delta Kananaskis, the ultimate in luxury hotel accommodation in the mountains.

Come to Canada this winter and take advantage of great ski hotel packages. You can stay in the major Canadian cities or book your hotel room in Whistler, Banff or Kananaskis villages. Any way you choose, this is a winter of hotel bargains.

Gord Collins is a frequent traveller to the Western Canada region and enjoys skiing and the outdoors. He recommends Whistler hotels and Banff Hotels as the ultimate in ski vacation accommodation. Come to Canada and enjoy spectacular mountain skiing and an unbeatable outdoor experience for the whole family.

The Ultimate Ski Bucket List

For downhill skiers, “powder snow” provides the ultimate skiing experience. For most skiers however, good powder skiing is a short-lived and infrequent event. Ski areas in some geographic areas enjoy fairly frequent “powder days” but in most areas, powder days are rare and the dryness and depth of snow is often marginal.

In most ski areas too, when powder snow does occur, it is only a matter of hours before it is completely “tracked out”, lumped up and beaten down. Only those few early birds that ride the first chairs in the morning get the ultimate run of the day, in deep, consistent, smooth, untracked snow.

For years, diehard powder snow enthusiasts have headed for the backcountry to “ski the powder” among remote alpine peaks, far from crowded ski areas. Many enjoy the peace and quiet of ski touring and move and ski at a pace governed by their own physical fitness.

Others who may be less ambitious or have less time, but who have ample disposable funds, have headed for the backcountry in helicopters. For about $1000 per day or more, heli-operators offer small groups of proficient skiers 5 to 7 days of guided skiing on huge pristine slopes, high in the mountains. Guests stay in comfortable lodges and spend their days being shuttled back and forth with their guides, with each run on a fresh untracked slope. Heli skiing has its problems. There are “down days” when storms make flying impossible and there is always the inherent risk of all backcountry skiing: avalanche.

Avalanche risk depends on many factors. All reputable backcountry operators provide highly qualified guides who choose areas for skiing and a safe route down the hill. On days of poor weather or unstable snow, guides may avoid alpine areas and restrict their groups to “skiing the trees”. Tree skiing is a fixture of all mechanized backcountry skiing and is preferred by some skiers to the more open “alpine” skiing.

In recent years, a new type of mechanized backcountry ski operator has emerged. Snowcat skiing operators use snowcats to transport skiers and snowboarders into backcountry regions. Snowcats are fitted with a large cab that seats clients in a warm, comfortable environment. A snowcat typically carries a group of 12 clients, two guides and a driver.

Of course, snowcats are much slower than helicopters. They are also much less expensive and guests can expect to pay between $500 and $600 a day, including transportation, lodging, meals, and guiding. As slow as snowcats may be, most clients will wear themselves out every day and get just as much skiing as their group can handle.

The great advantage of cat skiing is that “down” days almost never occur. Clients ski every day and bad weather can often mean extra-good snow. Cat skiing is more relaxed and “laid back” than heli skiing as there is no need to share equipment between groups or to maximize equipment usage. Cat skiing is very “client-friendly”. Each group has a dedicated machine and it moves at the group’s pleasure. Weaker skiers can feel at ease and not “pushed”.

Snowcats provide a relatively quiet, comfortable, warm and relaxed environment in which the trip back up the hill can be almost as much fun as the run down. Guests can “unbutton”, dry out, warm up, converse and browse on sandwiches, cookies, cake and drinks. If a guest gets tired, it’s easy to “sit out” a run and ride down to the next pickup with the cat driver.

Snowcat skiing is more restricted geographically than heli skiing. However, that has a drawback. Since they can operate in a larger area, heli-operators may sometimes be less familiar with changing snow conditions and risk factors than snowcat operators who work in a more restricted area.

fotosearch_k16370883_sm

Most snowcat operators have ample terrain to consistently provide good snow, even in periods of drought, and to ensure that clients exhaust themselves every day. Chatter Creek Mountain Lodges Ltd. operates in a 95 sq. km area and ski between the elevations of 5400ft and 9500 ft. Monashee Powder Adventures advertises an area of 66 sq. km and operate between the elevations of 7800 ft and 3,000 ft.. Baldface Lodge uses over 140 sq km. Guests need not worry about running out of terrain!

Snowcat skiing provides a wonderful holiday for intermediate and advanced skiers alike. Individuals, family groups, groups of friends, business associates can have a “trip to remember”. Operators with remote lodges offer a real “backcountry” experience, usually with good food and very comfortable accommodations.

Lockie Brown is retired and lives near Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He has cat skied for about 10 years, taking groups of 12 and 24 friends to different cat ski venues in British Columbia. He now takes his groups to Chatter Creek Mountain Lodges near Golden, B.C.

Useful Info About Different Types Of Skis

Transport is essential, regardless of the weather conditions. Sometimes, man has to rise above his surroundings and devise innovative means of transport. This was especially true in places where snow is an almost permanent feature. Skiing originated in Scandinavia as a necessity and since then, has seen a lot of progress in style, technology and use.

The father of modern skiing is said to be Sondre Norheim. He came up with the idea of using bindings that help in turning when skiing downhill, and this was improved upon by Mathias Zdarsky, which led to what is now known as alpine skiing. Hannes Schneider came up with the idea of body rotation for steering. The Arlberg technique became popular as the popularity of the sport also increased.

There are numerous types of skiing events: Alpine skiing (or Downhill skiing), Backcountry skiing (off Piste skiing), Cross-country skiing (Nordic skiing), Extreme skiing, Heliskiing, Newschool skiing, Telemark skiing, Speed skiing, Ski jumping, Ski mountaineering, Ski touring, Snowboarding, Snow kiting, Freestyle skiing and Cat skiing.

With this came a variety of techniques to enable a correct manner of skiing, and these helped in getting the best out of the sport. It became necessary to have the right clothing and equipment for all-around safety.

Skiing has proved to be a sport where even physically challenged people are able to join in, thanks to technological advances. The use of outriggers, ski tip retention devices, sit skis, single and double color guides and inter-skier communication takes care of most needs of these people.

Ski slopes are color coded to define difficulty levels with green indicating beginners’ slopes and black for the experts. Snow conditions that are favored by all are the packed powder, granular snow, corn snow, and the most challenging of all, crusts.

There are many types of resorts for the uninitiated as well as the experts and competitions are held for every level. Facilities provide the equipment, ensuring medical supervision and well laid out, well marked tracks.

Learn from the experts, get your kit and you’ll experience the thrill of speed few activities can compare with!

La Jolla Jet Skiing Adventure from Mission Bay San Diego

One benefit of living in San Diego is living right next to the ocean. However, many residents do not take advantage of living so close to the coast by, for example, taking a walk on the beach or going for a swim in the ocean. One could even take a tour along the bay as a way to enjoy living so close to the beach. What people often neglect to remember is the opportunity to explore San Diego on an exhilarating jet ski tour. Whether you just moved here, have lived here your whole life, or are simply visiting, a knowledgeable tour guide can show you great places you have never seen before.

There are many beautiful and exciting attractions to see while riding a jet ski in the San Diego Bay. The Coronado Island, sea lions and the USS Midway are just a few attractions you could see while dashing around the bay with your tour guide. The only way to get to Coronado Island by traveling on land is by using the Coronado Bridge. Although the Coronado Bridge is a sight to see, there are plenty of other places to see in the area. However, the easiest way to travel between Coronado Island and the San Diego coast is by using a jet ski or a boat. Considering the fact that the USS Midway is on the San Diego coast and sea lions can be found on the coast as well, it seems easier to take a tour on a watercraft to see a lot of San Diego’s great attractions. You may definitely want to consider a jet ski though because it would allow you to see sea lions closer than a boat would allow due to the smaller and, therefore, less intimidating size than a big boat.

A jet ski tour can accommodate one or more people. Therefore, you do not necessarily need to have a group to take a tour here in the San Diego area, although it might make it a lot more fun. If you have a large group, some tour companies will be willing to give discounts based on the size of your large group, but you will have to call for that special pricing. From firsthand experience, I can say that riding a jet ski is a lot of fun, though I did not get to drive because I had no experience beforehand. However, prior experience with jet skis is usually not necessary if you are going to take a tour on a jet ski or even a little boat. Usually before riding a an unfamiliar vehicle, the tour guide or someone else that is qualified will give you a quick orientation to the controls of the watercraft. It may seem scary at first but jet skis can be a lot of fun.

Skiing San Diego

Another benefit about living in San Diego is that the weather is perfect almost all year round. The San Diego weather makes almost any day perfect for taking a jet ski tour in the bay. Taking a ride on a watercraft allows you to see a lot of the great sights on the San Diego coast, while also enjoying the sun and ocean. A ride around the coast gives you a great experience to share on social media, but it also gives you a great life experience overall. In addition, taking a tour in the bay is a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday with your family or friends. Although San Diego jet ski tours can be expensive, the fun and thrilling experience you get from a jet ski tour is worth it. While you are in the area, you may also want to visit many of the great attractions on land, such as Sea World and the Balboa Park. Have fun!

If you are looking for adventure in San Diego, you should check out San Diego Bay Adventures. They offer jet ski rentals and tours, and even nighttime and daytime paddle boarding activities.
